Spontaneous Expressions
41 works
This series represents a major departure in technique and control for me. Having primarily worked with oil paint in an expressive but precise manner to create distinct forms of color to affect the viewing plane, I desired to explore less controllable forms of painting. As such I turned to highly fluid acrylic paint and ink, mixing with water, acrylic mediums, and various papers to create layers and texture while allowing free mixture of pigment.
The decision to relinquish control was not made lightly. Precision has long been a point of pride and a source of security in my practice, and to deliberately step away from it required a willingness to accept outcomes I could not fully anticipate or govern. In placing my trust in the movement of fluid pigment across a surface I found myself in a more collaborative relationship with the medium itself — no longer dictating the final form but instead guiding, responding, and at times simply observing as the materials made decisions of their own. What emerged from this process was a body of work that feels simultaneously spontaneous and inevitable, as though the forms that surfaced had always been latent within the materials, waiting for the conditions that would allow them to appear.
