Fancy Dancy Elite Art Homo

I have long sought to find a synthesis between the organic and linear, the abstract and the concrete, the areas between perceptibility in which the mind is allowed to wander and find its own unique solution to the visual problem. Using layers of mixed media, varyingly stenciled and freehand drawn, my aim was to create intersecting planes of color and shape while using each medium to help modify the others. The build up of textures and shapes as a means to create space is a direct continuation of the work of Julie Mehretu while trying to impart my own sense of color and media experimentation.
The series itself is meant to serve a larger purpose and be a direct response to the sale of NFTs in general but in particular the record breaking sale by fellow artist Beeple. The issues are numerous including the seemingly gossamer value of crypto currency and the NFT market, as well as the blockchain’s massive power needs, but more importantly are the titles and depictions within the series of work sold at Christie’s. The series itself is almost entirely sketches and practice pieces, which in and of itself represents nothing wrong and is proper use of an artist’s time honing skills, but combined with the seemingly transphobic images and homophobic titles the series gave me pause. In particular his reference to fancy-dancy elite art homos in a piece he created exploring shape and light gives the series its name as the titular attack on conceptual art dismisses a century of artistic progress and reinforces an outdated and homophobic notion that I felt as a gay man, but even more so as an artist, I had no choice but to try and respond to.
Whereas Beeple’s series attempts to beat one over the head with its meaning, I hope to explore the more conceptual nature found in the visual plane. It is within this plane I am most fully able to communicate through color, line, shape, and texture where infinite possibilities of these fundamental principles have long driven me to abandon the truly seen and the slavish devotion to recreation of an image. Here I turn to explore the emergence of form through abstraction and abstraction through representation, pitting each against each other to form a central tension that gives each piece a unique feel and movement.
